Shopping for Fabrics

It is the responsibility of every fashion designer or custom tailor to shop for different textile and other materials for clothes making. While some of them have mastered the trade, there are others who are still not proficient with fabric sourcing. To aid who are not yet experts in the fabric market, here are a few pointers to guide them in purchasing fabrics in the market.

For a start, it is advisable that a designer or tailor should have a design concept ready before he heads for the fabric market to shop. With a design concept in mind, fabric sourcing would be easier because the designer already knows what to look for. This way, the designer will be able to save time searching through overwhelming displays of cloth.

Once you have an idea which fabrics work well with your design, it is important that you decide on which suppliers you want to purchase your fabrics from. There are actually a lot of options provided for you in the market for fabric sources. However, if you buy from the first-hand manufacturers, you will be required to purchase a particular volume usually amounting to a thousand of yards and above) before they will consider your order. If your fabric needs is not that large, you can always buy from secondary textile sellers to avoid spending too much on excessive fabric quantity.

There are a few things to take note when choosing for the perfect fabric for your design. Analyse the fibre content, texture and feel, fabric weight, the fabric width, the cost of the material, and colours. After scrutinising the fabric qualities mentioned above, it is recommended that the designer asks for a sample yardage to allow the designer to make varied styles and to test if the fabric is really fit for the apparel concept. Of course, lastly, it is important that the designer takes his time when choosing what fabric to buy because a rushed decision might lead to an inaccurate cloth purchase, putting all the cash disbursement to waste.
